QUICK TIPS ON BUILDING A WEB SITE
Remember when
creating a web site keep it simple. Just because you can do something
doesn't mean that you should. Keep in mind that not everybody has the
latest and the greatest computer out nor does everyone know how to use their
computer most effectively to navigate the web. In other words keep the
graphics and sound down to a bare minimum and make sure it is easy for people
to figure out where to go on your site.
If you do not
know much about making a web site I suggest seeing what your isp (internet
service provider) offers. Most isp's will give you some space to put up a
web site and will usually have an easy to follow program to create
one. However I use 150m.com to host my
site which gives you 100 meg free if you do not mind advertising banners on
your site, but those can be taken off for about $10 a month. It is also very easy to use.
If you want to
do something more there are a lot of programs out there for creating web
sites. You can usually find some free ones at zd.net or
tucows.com. there are many good website building programs out
ranging anywhere from free to more than most people want to spend. Microsoft Word is very simple yet can make
some very effective web sites. To
hyperlink in word just highlight and right click on what you want, select
hyperlink and then type in the web address of where you want to go. Other than
that if you can create a document in Word then you can create a web page. When using word remember to save your page
as a web page and not a document.
With word and
frontpage you can associate these with your internet explorer for quick and
easy updating of your website. Just
click on the word or frontpage icon at the top of Internet explorer. When it asks you for Username and Password,
it is asking for the username and password of where you store your
website. After you give it your
username and password it will automatically save your changes and updates out
to the web when you hit save.
If you would
like to make your web address look a little more professional there are
redirectional services. For
example christianmusic.ws points to, or redirects
to, http://christianmusic.150m.com/start.htm.
As you can see christianmusic.ws looks better and is
easier to remember. Plus if you name it how you would like people to look
you up in the search engines you may get better placement. Use your
keywords, words that people would use to look you up in a search engine, as
much a possible. smartredirect .com offers free
redirectional services. There are other
free services as well. The one I use is
registryrocket.com. It costs a little but I like the services
they offer and the way it looks.
If you are
looking to put sound links on your site I suggest to convert your files to either
mp3 or wma. Both of these file types
can compress very well. I use Music
Match found at musicmatch.com. To set the level of compression and change
the recording formats in music match select options, settings and then
recorder.
